Saddlery & Gunroom Trophy Shoot
Sunshine was the surprise in Biggin Hill on a shoot day, especially as it was a Bank holiday weekend!! The sun brought out plenty of members to do take on the challenge for the magnificent Saddlery & Gunroom Trophy. Stand one saw the new trap in action throwing high looping incomers that never showed more than its edge. Stand two was a rabbit and riser pair shot from the tower and stand three was the infamous outgoing mini and standard pair. Stand four consisted of a reasonable riser from the right followed by a vicious daisy cutter midi on the left; to finish off there was a simultaneous high and low overhead pair shot from the pit. Coming in fifth with a surprisingly low score of 28 was Bradley who, even more surprisingly, was beaten by Frank who was using his bad back, Chinese barrels and dodgy glasses as the excuses for the day!!! In joint second were Dan and Bob who were soundly beaten by Andy who, with a score of 40, is this year’s Saddlery and Gunroom Trophy champion. Even though there’s a year to get it polished I’ll bet Andy soon has the trophy sparkling and in pride of place on the mantelpiece to remind Bob which one of the York’s brought it home!!!

276: Sunday 1st July 2012 Beretta Sponsored Shoot
Sunshine was the order of the day for the early risers but as the morning progressed the weather started to close in to become the usual dismal BHCPSC shoot day, albeit the rain almost waited till we had finished! Still, the day saw a goodly number of members on hand to make most of an “interesting “ layout with a few targets that we haven’t seen for a while. Stand one was a low fast following incomer pair, stand two was a simultaneous crossing pair shot from the tower and three was the “easy” standard outgoing clay that managed to catch out more than just a few!! To add insult there was a pair of battue, and to finish off was a fast driven midi followed by a left to right lopper. Scores were pretty good (considering!), coming in as joint fifth with a score of 29 were Colin and Greg, who were just behind Tom on 30. However winning the member’s prizes this week were Phil in third place with a score of 32, Frank in second scoring 36 and to top gun Bradley with a remarkable 41. Our thanks to Beretta for sponsoring the prizes and to all the members who helped to clear the field. Some may think the picture shows the latest Biggin Hill boy band, others may think it’s just a bunch of losers (see Pam’s face!!) however congratulations to Bradley, Frank and Phil.

274: Sunday 3rd June 2012 Browning Sponsored Shoot
The day of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee flotilla saw just a few members escaping from wall to wall coverage on the TV and braving the rain to knock some bits of old clay out of the sky. However I’m sure that the Jubilee re-runs will fill any gaps in their viewing, probably for weeks to come!! The shoot this week consisted of a hurriedly put together selection of stands as unfortunately Luke, the hero who normally sets up our shoot, was involved in a bit of an accident overnight and wasn’t able to make it this morning. To tantalise and titillate we ended up with an out-gower and quartering bird from above the hedge on stand one, our old favourite of a rising teal on two and stand three was a rabbit and out-gower shot from the tower. Stand four was a simultaneous left and right pair of outgoing birds and to top it off the pit presented us with a vicious pair of battue, that raised much muttering. The leading members on the day were Greg with a 27, just behind Lawrence with 29 and Tom, who obviously rose to the occasion by shooting a right royal 30 to take third place. However it was Brian that was just pipped to the post by Kevin in first place shooting a 36. Our thanks to Browning for sponsoring the prizes and special thanks to this week to all the members who pitched in to get the set-up sorted and ready to shoot pretty much on time. We wish Luke a speedy recovery and hope to see him back with us at the next shoot in two weeks time.
272: Sunday 6th May 2012 Wingate Round 2 Gamebore
The second round of the Wingate, postponed from April, was blessed with damp overcast weather which did nothing to lift the spirits of the members, especially as we had a guest shooter from Florida who informed us that the temperature back home was 90oF. Unfortunately he was the only one that could use the weather as the excuse of the day!!! The highly missable targets today consisted of a following pair of high loopers on stand 1. Next, shot from the tower, stand 2 was a simultaneous low outgower and high crosser, and stand 3 was a pair of battue. Stand 4 was a combination of a rabbit and a standard outgower and finally there was an overhead midi and quartering standard shot from the pit. The scores were not remarkable!! But in 5th place for the day was Colin with a hard earned 23, just behind Bradley with 26, Tom with 27 and Brian with 28; but top of the pile with a score of 31 this week was Frank. Our thanks to Gamebore for the prizes of cartridges to 4th place. However today was also the second round of the Wingate and, with an impressive round one score of 40, Bradley managed to retain his advantage to become the 2012 Wingate champion with a combined score of 66. The other top shooter’s combined scores for the Wingate were:

270: Sunday 11th March 2012 Wingate Round 1
Sunday morning saw an excellent turnout to contest the first round of this year’s WinGate. The weather was kind to us and we all had a new toy to play with - a brand spanking new Rabbit trap; so all in all it had the making of a good shoot. The first stand at the top of the field was a following pair of rabbits appearing at speed from behind the hedge en-route to the pit. Excuses were allowed as the novelty of rabbits coming towards us is something that we have previously not enjoyed. Next was a simultaneous crosser and outgoing standard shot from the tower. This was followed by a following pair of daisy cutting midis and then the infamous pair of battue from the manual trap. Both stands invoked a serious number of expletives as there was some question that lead thieves had been at work in the cartridge store, again!! To round off the shoot, and restore some form of dignity to the scores, there was a pair of overhead standards at the bottom pit. The top shooter’s scores for this round were:
Bradley |
40 |
Bob |
39 |
Dave |
37 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dan |
32 |
Frank |
28 |
Laurence |
28 |
As ever with the WinGate there will be round two to take revenge and show some improvement in a month’s time!!
268: Sunday 15th January 2012 Bisley Sponsored Shoot
Frost to start the day and uncharacteristically good weather for Biggin Hill through the rest of the morning saw a goodly number of members in the field for the first Sunday shoot of the year. Refreshed from the Christmas break and ready to smash a more than just a few clays the day did not go well. Suffice it to say that there are more clays to pick up than were broken!!! The top pit had a sort of DTL clay (and we all know how much we love them!), the second stand was a simple(!) rising standard shot from the tower and stand three gave us an evil pair of kamikaze standards thrown from the top tower. Next was a rabbit and outgoing standard and to top things off the lower pit saw an on-report pair of overhead standards. The scores tell the tale! Chris, Les and Bradley brought up the rear with a score of 22; Phil was in forth with 25 just behind Barry and Dan on 26, just leaving the champion of the day (miraculously!) as Frank, turning in the top score of 29. With Lawrence missing on the day it just goes to prove what a bad influence he is on his Dad normally………………….(any comments which are printable to the editor please!!!) Our thanks to Bisley for sponsoring the prizes and we hope to see some very clean guns at the next shoot.
