From looking through the blog I find that for the second year running it seems unbelievable that this year’s weather was actually better than last year! The forecast was good but the mixture of the Annual BHCPSC Turkey shoot and the Biggin Hill micro-climate meant that we were all going to get cold and wet...........again!! For the members that ventured out there was the usual out of the hat selection of shooting partners to take on the 60 bird flush and two normal stands to make up 100 birds. The flush used five traps to launch various combinations of clays and the other two stands were a rabbit and away bird from the tower, and a daisy-cutter and battue combination shot from the pit. In a deviation from the norm and with scant regard to member’s dignity the scores are listed below:

Our thanks to all our helpers and especially to Howard for the prizes of Turkeys and Christmas fare to the top three pairs of shooters.

240: Saturday 6th November 2010 - The Chris Wallace Memorial Shield
Was it Hollywood? ............. no. Was it Bollywood? ............. well, possibly. Was it Bigginwood? ........... yes definitely!!!! The silver screen had come to the shooting ground to film an all action clay shooting blockbuster based on the adventures of the heroes and villains of BHCPSC……………well not quite!! We were however blessed with a film crew and an actor shooting a trail for a forthcoming movie. It would seem that the villain of the piece in the movie is a keen clay shooter and some action shots were needed. So when Paul had explained which end to hold the funny metal and wood thing that went bang, the camera rolled, the clapper board was clapped and the director called action. At that point there was a noticeable improvement in the standard of shooting as no member (or should that be extra?) wanted to be seen in the background missing a clay. George, thinking that they were shooting for the Gay Shooting Magazine, touched up his make-up and, much to the personal delight of the cameraman, starred in the butch trapper role. (although Di did have to remind him about the hand on the hip as he came out of character!) There were several members vying for the best places to stand to be in shot, others doing their John Wayne walk and even some checking out the possibility of a talking part whilst chatting up the film flunkies. Believe it or not while this was all going on we did have a member’s shoot across five stands. Colin shot a 32 to take fifth place; just beaten by Frank on 34 and Bradley (excuse of the week - the film lights get in my eyes!) with 36. Dave shot a 37 but this year’s holder of the Chris Wallace Memorial Shield, with a score of 40, is Dan. Thanks to all the helpers, especially Dave and his son Paul who came early to help us set up and to Pam and Suzanne for putting up with us. The next shoot, on Sunday November the 22nd, will be the annual Turkey shoot which, as usual, will be partly shot as a two man flush with partners being drawn out of the hat. See you there.
239: Sunday 24th October 2010, The Barnsby Trophy
A crisp frosty morning was probably the cause of the obviously grumpy mood that the members who did the setting up were in as they gave us the club’s old favourite, double rise DTL!!! Bert got most of the blame, but there is a theory that he was set up as the fall guy by the others! To go with the 30 bird DTL there was an on report overhead midi and standard pair in the pit and a low outgower and vicious battue combination shot from the tower. Having got the members disgruntled by the DTL the battue was an unwelcome addition. Never mind we will see them all again as pickups at the next shoot!! The scores tell the tale! Frank became mentioned in dispatches (again!) with a score of 24 to take 6th place. (he did ask for no publicity, and who can blame him with a 24!) George and Kevin did slightly better in joint 4th, with Barry H. in third with a 27. Runner up was Bob but this year’s Barnsby champion is Colin with a score of 29. Thanks to all the helpers and members who stayed on for the meeting. Thoughts and suggestions will be discussed with Howard and Jonathan and hopefully we will be able comeback with an outcome for the next shoot on Saturday the 6th November.
238: Saturday 9th October 2010, Treasurers Shield.
A testing Saturday morning shoot, set up by Bert and early volunteers. Stand 1 consisted of a following teal, which did not prove to be a challenge for most allowing us to get some easy scores. Stand 2 which was shot from the tower, a high standard crossing and a low midi crossing as a pair, however the low midi caused a problem affecting everyone’s scores. Stand 3, a rabbit and incoming bird on report, problems began when the spring on the rabbit trap had broken, upon searching for a replacement for the trap, we come across “Bert the Rabbit Thrower” who volunteered to act as the trap & trapper i.e. on the command of Paul, Bert launched the clay along the ground. Stand 4 was another stand which provided a challenge, an outgoing battue and standard going away! In the pit we see a driven overhead with a simultaneous outgoing standard, this required quick reactions to hit the pair before it was out of range. Overall there was a good turnout for the shoot, it was good to see some non members and old faces returning to the club. This year’s champion with 34 was Andy who has taken back the treasures shield for the family household from dad Bob (last year’s winner), Bob came in equal second place with Brad and coming in at equal 4th place was Frank and Dean. Thanks to our early volunteers who helped set up and also to all the volunteers who stayed on to clear the field.
There will be a “town hall” meeting of members after the shoot on Sunday the 24th October to discuss who will organise and deliver the shoot each fortnight in 2011 as Paul and Stuart are taking a back seat. We need you to be there, but most of all we need your ideas and commitment to keep the shoot alive and well for all existing and future members.
237: Sunday 26th September 2010 - *Express sponsored Shoot
The Biggin Hill micro climate never ceases to amaze! This week saw the shooting ground a good five degrees colder and much windier than most of the rest of the south-east, not to mention the smattering of rain which drove everyone into the clubhouse just before the shoot. The setup was a one of those Barry, Bert and Jim specials that looked tantalisingly easy until you got that ever sinking feeling when pair after pair sailed on to be come the pickups that we will be shooting next time! The first “easy” stand presented a following pair of high quartering standards from behind the hedge that needed more than just a hint of lead. The second stand gave us a lazy incoming lopper followed by an almost straight outgoing standard that was found to be very missable. Stand three was the standard simultaneous pair thrown from the tower and shot from the ground, giving them a more than even chance of escaping down the field. However, they turned out to be easy compared to the next stand which saw a simultaneous, fast, rising midi and standard pair cross in mid-air and wave a symbolic “V” shape back to the shooter whilst flying on. (Accidental I’m sure!) That just left the pit, and whilst you would hope for some respite there was none to be had; a pair of battue streaked skyward only to then become rocket propelled back to the ground and give just the odd microsecond to shoot them. The scores tell a sorry tale of woe with a clutch of members in sixth place with 26. Barry H showed that a rest from regular shooting pays dividends and was almost in bandit country with a score of 27, whilst Bob, having had a duck on stand 4, recovered to take fourth place with 31. Colin had an inspired day shooting a 32 and Paul, using a bad back as an excuse, “only” shot a 38 to take second place to Stuart as this week’s winner. Thanks to our early volunteers who helped set up and are able, yet again, to take all the blame for the low scores, and also to all the volunteers who stayed on to clear the field so speedily this week. *Note Express prizes to be awarded at next shoot due to Jonathon having a holiday!!!
236: Saturday 11th September 2010 - The Lottery Trophy
Considering the murky wet weather that pervaded the shooting ground on Saturday a goodly number of members turned out to destroy some clays. The set up this week gave us some interesting challenges. Starting from the top of the field and working down; first up was a lazy incoming following pair, then, shot from the tower, was a rabbit and quartering bird combination. Things started to get more interesting trying to get underneath the simultaneous pair thrown from the tower as they careered into the ground. Having just got the brain attuned to getting miles under the clay the next stand gave us a rocket powered midi teal that was difficult to catch on the way up!! To finish things off were an overhead simultaneous pair thrown from behind the pit that hardly broke the tree line, and were very missable. The scores on the doors saw a glut of 34’s from Kevin, Paul and Stuart, just behind Bob with 37 but, thinking that the silverware (sounds better than tinware!) was his with a magnificent 40 Barry became sadly disappointed as this was the lottery trophy. Out of the lottery hat a succession of people, including Paul, Pam, Suzanne and Stuart, were too emotional to accept the honour(!) and the lucky winner was Dave. With son Paul having been last years lottery champion Dave now no longer has to pretend the trophy on the mantelpiece was his, as this year it really is!!! I’m sure that you get fed up with the thank you’s every week, but this shoot really does exist through the membership pulling their weight and making it happen. So thank you to all our regular helpers and to everyone else there is always room for more. We are planning a “town hall” meeting of members after the shoot on Sunday the 24th October to discuss how in 2011 the shoot will be organised and delivered as Paul and Stuart are taking more of a back seat. We need you to be there, but most of all we need your ideas and commitment to keep the shoot available to existing and future members. The next shoot is on Sunday the 26th September for an Express sponsored shoot. See you there.
235: Sunday 29th August 2010 - The Saddlery & Gunroom Trophy
Whilst much of the area was warm and sunny, the Biggin Hill micro-climate produced overcast weather with a cold wind that (thankfully) kept the shorts at home and the range of knobbly knees seen of late well covered. The set up for the S&G Trophy looked pretty easy to the casual observer, and so it should have been; however with the usual level of skill and enthusiasm the members succeeded in making a complete pig’s ear of it to give the lads that clear the unbroken clays more work to do! The first easy challenge was an overhead rising teal in the lower pit. This led onto where the mayhem really started with a “simple” simultaneous outgoing pair of a midi and standard, which were unbelievably miss-able. Next were a pair of dropping standards thrown from the tower but shot from the field. Then relief incredibly came from a pair of battue shot from the tower; not normally our favourite target but today they seemed much friendlier than some of the others!! Then just to crush any expectations of a decent score came the rabbit followed by a superfast crosser that never go more than three foot (one metre in new money!) above the ground. Grown men cried!! However there always have to be winners, no matter how low the score is, and coming in fifth with a 50% hit rate was Colin, who was just behind Lawrence, who in turn was just behind Frank and Barry E.; but today’s winner and 2010 S&G champion, with just 32 scored, is Dan. Thanks to our early volunteers, Bert and Barry E who helped set up (and are able to take all the blame for the low scores!) and to all the volunteers who stayed on to clear the field. We’re always happy for more members get involved in any way to take some of the load. Paul and Stuart are looking to stand down into more of a supporting role and need some other members to take on more of the organisation needed to ensure that everything is in place at each shoot. Please don’t be shy in coming forward. The next shoot is on the 11th September for the Lottery Cup, when anyone can become champion!!
234: Saturday 16th August Protected Bird Shoot
Protected Bird Shoot Or maybe that ought to be not the protected bird shoot, as on the morning there wasn’t a protected bird to be seen anywhere!! Instead there were five “normal” stands to confound and irritate. In the pit there was an on report midi and standard overhead pair that were low enough to part the hair (for those that have some!). Next was the old favourite of a pair of battue that never showed their faces to give the shooter a chance; next was a following pair of crossing clays that curled around tantalising the shooter to miss at short range, and then there was a dropping pair of standards from the tower. Just to finish the ignominy was a jumping rabbit and teal combination at the top pit. The scores weren’t terrific(!) but with scores of 26 Dave, Graham and Andy took joint sixth place, Bob and Frank were joint fourth with 29 and Stuart third with 32. Dan scored 33 to take second place, but in first place, with a commendable score of 36 was Barry E. Thanks to early birds Barry E, Josh, Jim and Ostin who set up the shoot and to all the members who stayed on to clear the field.
233: Sunday 1st August - Napier Sponsored Shoot
The club is renowned for having a no blame attitude to all its members; however the policy is sometimes stretched to breaking point when there are some decidedly dodgy targets presented to the members. Today was one of those days with no one wanting to take responsibility for the rabbit(?) that leaped over the side of the lower pit, nor for the midi pair from the manual trap or the standard and mini on the tower but especially not for the simultaneous quartering pair that appeared from behind the hedge!! So in true blameless culture style we will not be naming Barry, Bert and George for the mayhem!! Those taking the prizes this week were Graham in third place and Dave in second, but in first place as the Napier Champion for 2010 is Dan. The scores are best forgotten! Our thanks as always to those members that helped at both ends of the shoot and to Napier for the cleaning product prizes to third place. We assume that there will be some gleaming barrels at the next shoot; only time will tell!!

232: Saturday 17th July – The BHCPSC Snooker shoot
Resurrected for the second year running was the BHCPSC Snooker Shoot and on a very pleasant day we saw a reasonable member turnout to try their luck. The snooker rules remained the same as last year (remarkably!) with the red being a pair of outgoing standards from the manual trap and the colours a single standard, midi or mini from the tower for 2, 3 or 4 points respectively. Most people went for the mini to get the points but it took a couple of misses to realise just how fast it was moving and dropping at the same time. There was some frustration with the pair that looked really easy until you came to shoot them but, as usual, there was a great deal of advice on offer from everyone who wasn’t actually shooting!! The other three stands consisted of a simultaneous rabbit and incomer, an on report left and right outgoing pair and, in the bottom pit, a following pair of driven standards. The scores always look fabulous on the snooker shoot due to the additional points. This year we had Bert and James in sixth place with a score of 34, just behind Ray with 35. Frank and Barry E tied in third place with 38 and in second place was Phil with a 39. However this year, demonstrating his misspent youth yet again by scoring 47 and taking the trophy was Dan. Thanks as usual to the helpers at both ends of the shoot for setting up and putting away but a special thank you to Bert, Barry and the boys from the shop who were all there really early to get things under way. See you all in a couple of weeks. Stay safe, TTFN.
231: Sunday 4th July 2010 Beretta sponsored shoot.
The sun shone on BHCPSC for what must be a record breaking second time this year. This week was our Independence Day shoot* when we remind ourselves how grateful we are not to still have the USA as a colony! The sun, of course, brought out the shorts and a motley array of knobbly white knees to frighten the local wild life. It also brought us perfect shooting weather; clear and bright with very little wind, so that most of the usual excuses for missing were useless! This time around there was nowhere to hide; No double rise DTL, no kamikaze pairs, no high rise teal and no rocket propelled midi’s, just five regular stands to bring a smile to everyone’s day.......... well that was the theory. Starting at the pit was probably the most testing stand with a pair of battue doing a red arrows impression weaving through the sky. This was followed by a simultaneous lazy incomer and quartering midi. Next was a pair of standards thrown from the tower and then there was a following pair of high teal from the right, shot from the tower. To cap it off there was a high bouncing bunny and an on report quartering standard. Simple enough? Well it was until you came to shoot the round! The scores tell the tale and the excuses became more inventive than we have ever seen; “I’m not used to sunshine in Biggin Hill”, “the mown field gave me hay fever”, “my sun glasses were too dark”, “the reflection from Bob’s head distracted me”, etc, etc. So no surprises then that in eight place with a score of 30 were Graham and Andy, in sixth was Dan with 31 and Barry E made it to 5th with a 32. Equal scores of 35 saw the next 3 places decided by the toss of a coin for Barry H 4th, Bob 3rd and Paul 2nd, leaving Stuart to take the win with a score of 37. Thanks as ever to our members that make the shoot possible for everyone by setting up and clearing away, and thanks to Beretta for the prizes to third place.
* No Americans were hurt during the running of this shoot!!

230: Saturday 19th June 2010 Have a go day
After a quiet start there was a constant trickle of novices passing through with more than just a few fired up to have another go at one of our Saturday shoots. Hopefully they will get the bug and become new members. The member’s shoot was simple in concept but it would seem that none of us can shoot down the line, and when they come in pairs they become downright impossible. Clearly we need to have some more practice!!......................well maybe in a month or two!! The other member’s stands were a massive relief with a rabbit and riser shot from the tower, and an overhead pair in the pit. Scores seemed a bit irrelevant and we will pass on quickly this week to protect the guilty!! Thanks to Barry E and the boys from the shop who turned up early to help set up; to Cas, Di and Bert for delivering tea and refreshments and to all the members who stayed on to clear the field. The next shoot is on Sunday the 4th July……………….I wonder if we can find some bald eagles to shoot at; mind you on today’s showing they would all get away!!
229: Sunday 6th June 2010 Beretta Sponsored shoot
An overnight storm had refreshed the newly mown field to give Bert and Barry E. a clear canvas with which to work their magic and give us a “memorable” shoot. At the bottom pit was a BHCPSC rarity of a driven clay to remind us that you sometimes have to loose sight of the target behind the barrels or the clay flies on to become an old friend at the next shoot. Next up was a simultaneous outgoing battue and standard to keep us sharp before shooting a following pair of quartering teal from the tower; still not too bad, but then came the pair of kamikaze standards off the tower. It was at this point that questions were being asked about which “B’s” set the shoot up, to which the answer, I can only reply, was “Bert and Barry”………………… or was the question something to do with parentage?!! Last but not least on the top stand was a quartering standard and an on-report rising midi that dashed away rapidly into the bright blue yonder. Maybe for some the shoot seemed more forgettable than memorable, but there were at least a few smiles from the members. As a Sunday shoot the scores wont do a great deal towards everyone’s yearly trophy chances or for the MarGate averages, but there was the much of the inevitable advice and discussion about how it would be done…….. next time! Coming through as the best of the day were George and Phil, who shot 28 to tie for forth place, Kevin was in third with 30 and Barry E just ahead with 31; however today’s master of the mayhem was Dan with a worthy 33. Our thanks to Beretta for prizes to third place; also to our two “B’s” for setting up and for the numerous members who stayed behind to pack everything away in record time. It is always appreciated, especially by those who also hear the cock crow to make the shoot possible. The next shoot on the 19th June is billed as the have-a-go day and, whilst there will be novices all over the place finding out what we do, there will be a viable shoot for members.
228: Saturday 24th April 2010 Independent Magazines Club Shoot
After a Biggin Hill misty start, the sun came out to have a good laugh at the collection of brilliant white knobbly knees on show from members who braved shorts this week!! The clear sky also made it easy to see the clays flying off into the distance as questions were asked about the possibility of the lead being nicked! The real cause was a selection of stands to outwit the unwary; starting with a sneaky rabbit followed by an on report teal. Stand 2, shot from the tower, was a following pair of crossers, 3 was a pair midis off the tower and 4 was a going away pair from left and right. The final stand was shot from the bottom pit with a hair parting standard from behind and an on report quartering midi to finish off. Bert, Barry and Kevin all managed a score of 28 to take joint 5th place; Keith came in 4th with 31 and Paul and Stuart were just ahead with 32; however the Independent Magazine’s champion of the day, for the second year running, was Andy with 36. Our thanks to Barry E for helping to set up, and for the other early birds and hangers on that helped at both ends of the shoot to make it all possible.
..........Dinner 2010 Pictures
227: Sunday 9th May 2010 Gamebore Sponsored shoot
With the weather just about holding the rain stayed at bay to see a goodly number of shooters turn out for the Gamebore sponsored shoot to enjoy some varied targets. Down in the pit there was a low overhead outgoing standard followed by a quartering clay from the left; next up was a simultaneous outgoing midi and standard from right and left respectively. Paul managed to show us all that you could shoot both with one cartridge but to most of us there was a degree of frustration in trying to break them with two shots! The shooters language and the amount of advice proffered seemed to get a bit more colourful around the pair of quick battue off the tower; however relief was found on the next stand with the sedate curling crosser from above the hedge and to finish off with there was a high teal at the top stand. The scores weren’t that bad for the club with Colin in 6th place with 32, Paul and Barry E tied for 4th on 33 and Bob was 3rd with 36; however this week’s champions were Phil and Stuart who tied on 37. Our thanks to Gamebore for the prizes, also to Bert and Barry E for assisting with the set-up and to the members that missed the start of the F1 Spanish Grand Prix by staying behind to help clear the field.
They say a volunteer is always worth 2 pressed men; however in this case Paul and Stuart are becoming the pressed men and are looking for some volunteer members to get involved and take on some of the load of organising the shoot every fortnight. If you feel you can, please have a chat with them to see what’s involved.

Don’t forget it’s the club shoot dinner on Friday at the Woodman. See you there.
226: Saturday 24th April 2010 - The Secretary’s Trophy
A disappointing turnout on, what is likely to be, the only sunny day of the year in the Saddlery micro-climate saw some determined barracking from the line to bring the averages down. Some of it worked but there were flashes of inspiration from Dean in 5th place, Andy in 4th, Hassan & Colin as joint runners up, but this year’s Secretary Bird was Bob with an impressive score of 40. Thanks to our early volunteers, Colin & Dean who helped set up and to Andy and Bob who stayed on to clear the field. We’re always happy for more members to help and are looking for someone to take over the organisation needed at every shoot to let Paul and Stuart stand down into more of a supporting role. The next shoot is 9th May for the Gamebore sponsored shoot.
225: Sunday 11th April 2010 - Wingate Round 2
Round 2 of the Wingate saw a field full of shooters intent on breaking all the pick-ups from previous weeks. The plan was good, the execution less so! What looked like a fairly straightforward layout had a twist at every turn! The simultaneous overhead battue and standard pair shot from the pit needed some quick reactions, whilst the on-report outgoing left and right standards on stand 4 also needed to be shot well before they escaped too far down the field. Stand 3 saw a pair of standards nose dive from the tower and there was a grass cutter followed by a rising midi shot from the tower. To cap things off stand 1 had a pair of fast high standards appear from above the hedge. On reflection maybe it wasn’t that straightforward!! However the fantastic five over the 2 shoots started in 5th place with Graham. In fourth place was Frank the Cyberman sporting the latest in ear defenders from planet Zarg using his new gun; Although it was made in China the barrels did seem to make it to the end of the shoot without drooping. After a losing the toss Dan took 3rd place and rapidly retired to warm up his extremities, having braved the Biggin micro climate in shorts!! With the north wind blowing there was more blueing than just on his gun barrels! In a very worthy 2nd place was Colin but the 2010 Wingate champion was Barry H. Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to all the helpers who stayed on to clear the field. The member’s scores for both rounds were as follows:

224: Crystal Shoot 27th March 2010
This year’s Crystal shoot, sponsored by George, Di, Bert and Cas, saw 23 shooters compete for the magnificent Crystal glass prizes. The added benefit to this shoot is that Paul & Stuart get a lay-in and as the sponsors also set the shoot up, someone else gets all the blame! And boy was there some blame to be dished out this week. George and Bert came up with some “birds” that we could well do without again. The pair of standards off the tower weren’t too bad and in their way neither were the standard and mini on stand 2. Things began to go downhill on stand 4 with the high pair appearing over the left shoulder and then, in the pit, there was the flying pig (yes I did say “pig”) followed by an overhead midi. To top it off the dynamic duo(!) had arranged for a very slightly delayed pair of teal in the top pit which had everyone trying a different technique, mostly to no avail. Still not a problem when it’s the Crystal Trophy as 1st, 2nd & 3rd are actually 5th, 7th & 9th! So in third place, which was actually 9th was Kevin, second (7th) was Andy and this year’s Crystal Trophy champion (5th) was the other member of the York family, Bob. Well done to all our prize winners and a special thanks to our sponsors George, Diane, Albert & Cas for the superb Crystal prizes.
Paul & Stuart are always looking for other members to get involved and take some of the load of ensuring that the shoot is always there & ready. Have a word with them and see how you can help, however small, it all helps.

223: Sunday 14th March 2010 - Wingate Round 1
As ever the Wingate Trophy is to be competed for over 2 shoots. This week’s shoot had an assortment of stands including overhead left and right standards in the pit, a pair of standards off the top of the tower, a rabbit and quartering standard and a following pair of incomers. However as it was Mother’s day there had to be a mother of all stands! Sure enough there it was; a pair of battue, shot from the tower, and that never actually showed their face for the fraction of a second that they were visible. We will definitely see most of them again next shoot!! The member’s scores for this round were:

222: Saturday 27th February 2010- The Eley Sheild
The weather just about held out for the Eley Trophy shoot, but due to the previous rain it was definitely wellingtons to get through the quagmire to the field! The setup was classed as teasing rather than testing this week and with some very good scores returned it would seem that there was some serious inspiration to shoot the “interesting” high and low overhead in the pit. Next there was a simultaneous standard and battue pair and things didn’t get too much better with a following pair of a head height midi and standard quartering clays from the right. However relief was found at the top of the field with standards off the tower and some lazy incomers on stand one. For a change the scores don’t have to be withheld to protect the guilty! A very pleasing personal BHCPSC best of 34 for Bert put him in joint fifth place with Dan; Andy and Graham tied for third with 35 and Bob was runner up with a score of 36. This year’s winner of the Eley Trophy with an excellent score of 39 was Barry E. Special thanks this week have to be extended to Bert, George, Di and Barry E for stepping into the breach to help set up and to all of the helpers that cleared up in a record 20 minutes after the shoot. The next shoot is on Mother’s day so start practicing your excuses now!! See you there.
221: Sunday 14th February 2010 Suzuki Moto GP Trophy.
It might have been the anniversary of the St Valentine’s Day massacre but it wasn’t the sound of Thompson sub machine guns that were heard behind the Saddlery and it certainly wasn’t a massacre! In fact next shoot we will be greeting most of the clays again as old friends! The reason was a sneaky clay that appeared over the hedge on stand 1, a left and right combo on 2 and a quartering teal shot from the tower. Things got worse when the rabbit on stand 4 was followed by a midi grass cutter and then, there was everyone’s favourite of a pair of battue over the pit! The scores didn’t help the club average and will be unrecorded to protect the guilty, but coming through were Phil, Colin and Bradley in joint 3rd place, Paul in 2nd and the Suzuki Moto GP champion for 2010 is Stuart. Attributed to Al Capone is the quote “You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.” Maybe we need to take the advice, get more aggressive and put more concentration into the gun part! Next chance to get it right is Saturday 27th February, see you there.
220: Saturday 30th January 2010
- Laurona Trophy Shoot
A clear frosty morning greeted the members, visitors and guests for the Laurona Trophy shoot and, as ever, the Biggin microclimate added its own chill factor to make it a very cold place!! The layout soon caused some heated words to take some of the chill off with stand four the warmest place on the field! Here a fast quartering midi curled away and defied the sub-sonic cartridges to catch it up. There’ll be plenty of midi pick-ups next shoot!! The pit presented a simultaneous overhead mini and standard, whilst stand three gave us a standards from left and right on report. Stand one was a side on teal from the left and, shooting from the tower, the final stand was a rabbit up the bank with a simultaneous long incomer. As ever the scores tell the tale!! Paul inherited the Laurona trophy from Bob as reigning champion with a score of 42, Stuart followed on with 37 and Barry E was in third with 32. The average score for the day was around about 21. Notable scores of the day included out latest sexagenarian birthday girl who celebrated by beating George with his own gun!! Congratulations Diane; and to be clear George, “sexagenarian” doesn’t mean that your luck’s changed but the beating could become literal if you don’t behave!! Our thoughts go to Suzanne, who was unwell today, and our thanks to Cas for standing in and supplying endless teas and coffees to warm the inner shooter. As always, we’re grateful to the club members who clear their own spent cartridges and also those who stay to assist with the clearing up; there is however always scope for a few more and it would be good to see some new helpers pitch in so we can all get away promptly. Valentines Day brings us our next Sunday shoot; so don’t forget to leave the card on the pillow before coming out, or dinner will definitely be in the dog when you get home!
219: Sunday 17th January 2010 - Bisley Sponsored Shoot
Uncharacteristically good weather for Biggin Hill greeted us for the first Sunday shoot of the year. The only evidence of the snow from the last shoot was in the pit, where those without their wellingtons got a boot full whilst shooting a simultaneous overhead pair that seemed to hang in the air, well at least until the trigger was pulled! Stand 4 greeted us with a following pair of teal, stand 3 was a BHCPSC “kangaroo” followed by a quartering midi and stand 2 was a pair of battue launched from the tower. To finish off a testing layout we had a “simple” outgoing mini and standard pair from the manual trap on stand 1. The scores tell the tale! Andy and Barry H brought up the rear with a score of 25; Dan was in fifth with 26 just behind Bob with 29. In third place was Stuart, second was Barry E but champion of the day was Paul with a score of 34. Our thanks to Bisley for sponsoring the prizes to third place.
218: Saturday 2nd January 2010 - The Frostbite Trophy.
The first shoot of the year is aptly named; this year with a light covering of snow over a frozen ground it was certainly brass monkey weather to greet members and guests to the Frostbite Trophy Shoot. This week’s set-up had a hair parting midi daisy cutter and on-report overhead standard shot from the pit; stand 4 was a high pair of battue, stand 3 was a following pair of crossers whilst stand 1 consisted of a rabbit hopping over the top bank followed by a low quartering bird. On the tower there was an easy looking following pair of incomers. I did say “looked” easy and strangely enough the air seemed a bit warmer around the tower as it caught out some of the best. The scores were encouraging to get the year going, there were a flurry of 33’s from Barry E., Kevin and Bob to take joint 5th place, Graham came in 4th with 37 and Paul was runner up with 42. However this year’s joint champions (or should that be brass monkeys) with 43 were Dan and Stuart. Bert, it would seem, was hoping to do a bit better with a bit of ice skating in the car park; However his unplanned Torvill and Dean ended with too many arms and legs in the air simultaneously and the inevitable landing. The judges awarded “nil- points” thus adding nothing to his score for the shoot. Maybe better luck in a fortnight for the year’s first Sunday shoot!
