93: Saturday January 8th New Year Shoot

An amazing number of people (forty) turned up for Saturday's Shoot, with thirty two taking part in a 'friendly' practice competition. This was the first Shoot of the year after what seemed quite a long Holiday, give it another two weeks and it will all seem an 'expensive dream'..................
What was not a dream of course, was the nightmare that took place in Asia on Boxing Day and we will probably link a collection into a Sunday shoot in the coming weeks.
There was a heavy wind to blow away all the cobwebs (but, unfortunately, not the forthcoming credit card bills) . Thank you to Dave C. who set up on his own, and if the gusts were not enough , he managed to put up some testing 'birds' .
The final scores were very close with James, Dave C and Nigel L. all shooting an excellent 31, third position went to Simon on 32 who actually enjoyed the gusts of wind, in second slot was Darrel C with 37, first position with a superbly shot 38, went to Malcolm. So well done Malcolm sorry it was just a practice shoot, but at least you won a pound off Simon!!
Happy New Year to you all

94: Sunday January 23rd 1st Reverse Order Shoot

Sundays shoot was called 'the reverse order Shoot', an amazing 35 guns took part, even though they were not too sure what it was all about ! Basically it was a 50 bird layout, as normal, the difference being that the lowest scorer had the first choice of an assortment of trophies, all the way to the highest score. This gave a chance for all members who took part, and waited to the end, an opportunity to receive something for the mantle piece.
Needless to say Paul and Stuart both received ladies trophies, and the first and second on the trophy front were Brendan and Dan (alias Mat) . Confused?, don't worry, we're doing it all again in a months time!!.
Thanks to Dave and Mat for an excellent set up.

95: Saturday February 5th Laurona Trophy

The Laurona Trophy shoot took place at Biggin Hill on Saturday, and again another large turnout was to be seen. The numbers of shooters has really increased over the past year, as 'regulars' will have noticed. This can be put down to not only the friendly yet competitive attitude that everyone enjoys at the club, but also to the layout that Dave, Matt, and Neil put down each shoot.(not forgetting Rosemary's bacon sarnies and coffee of course !) Effectively there is a new layout on every date.
The shoot is a high gun only trophy, which is supplied by Larona, who are a Spanish company making Shotguns, hunting knives, and believe it or not swords.
This shoot had one of the most difficult layouts we have seen in several years, as could be seen from the scores and the fact that the previous year's winner, the veteran Paul G. gave it a miss. However, the swords were out for TerryT. who took everything that was thrown at him, the wind, barracking, you name it. He scored 35 and won the high gun Trophy, for the second time in this compettion, which he last one as a teenager back in 1997. So well done Terry try not to leave it too long next time...............

96: Sunday February 20th 2nd Reverse Order Shoot

Well it's late February and the weather is meant to be getting warmer as
spring approaches. Not. It was 5 degrees at Biggin Hill and with the wind chill
factor guess around minus 5 degrees. That's the scene that welcomed the 35 participants
on Sunday, and I hope you have all warmed up by now. Let me apologise in
advance for any typo errors, as it is difficult to to type wearing  mittens.........
This was the second 'reverse order shoot'. Basically all participants
receive a prize in the reverse order of their scores, ie high gun is the lowest prize.
I have never seen the club house so busy while the comp. was in progress,
some were even taking a break between stands just to warm up!! The biting wind
was the culprit, leaving hands and feet freezing, and a nice tan for some!.
The 'fur and feather' stand was difficult, with the rabbit, helped by the
gusts, sometimes ending up two stands along the line.
The first four prize-winners were all non members, Louise, Catherine , Yorkie
(?),with Andy, taking top slot, well done to you all! At the other, if you
followed the plot closely, were 30th Barry E.. (6th in real money) 31st.
Keith D. 32nd. Bobby, 33rd. Brian I. The last two positions were, in sympathy
with the competition, a complete reverse of the last first reverse shoot (read
it again it does make sense) with Paul G. in 34th on a score of 34, and yes,
you guessed it , Stuart M. in 35th with a score of........35.
So thank you to everyone who took part, and even more thanks to those who
understood it. Thank you to Howard for the prizes (and whose idea it was),
and of course to Dave Matt and Neil for the set up.

97: Saturday March 5th Mother-inlaw Shoot

To protect us from a fierce northerly wind, we all huddled together on
Saturday, and had a 'friendly pool shoot'. Yes it was f.............freezing, and
my hat goes off to Dave, Matt and Neil, for setting up, which must have been
most un-enjoyable at 7.30.am.!!!
There were about 30 'guns' having a practice with lessons and instruction
going on, with about 20 putting their names into the pool shoot. Unfortunately we
were honoured with Stuart M and Paul G. unfortunately, as they took first and
second position with 37 and 34 respectively, third in the pool shoot was
Sean on 33, all excellent scores taking into account the cold and wind.

Next on the agenda is the club Dinner and Trophy presentation on the 18th.,
contact Terry or Howard if you would like to come, as we have had a few late
cancellations, (no more please!).

warmer...... promise!

98: Shoot Dinner 2005

The Bakery Restaurant in Tatsfield was again the venue for B.H.C.P.S.C. annual Dinner and Trophy presentation for the 2004 overall competitions totals. This event is always well supported by the club and its members, and this year was no exception. The food was of a very high quality, and enjoyed by one and all, and we would like to thank Andrew, the owner, for another superb evening.
Howard presented Rosemary and Pam with flowers in appreciation of the work they put in.
Also Matt D. Dave C. and Terry T. were presented with gifts in thanks for their input. Neil H. is still 'injured' and will receive his gift at the next shoot.
Thank you to Helena and Rosemary for doing the raffle. JP our 'webmaster' was the official photographer for the evening and pics will be displayed on this site, and in the clubhouse.

The first award was presented by Paul G. to Darrel C. for the 'most improved shooter over the year, this is now becoming an annual event, and was well deserved, well done Darrel!

In 6th. position in the overall totals was Darrel C,. 5th. was the mighty Barry E., with Barry H. taking 4th.position. Third spot went to Dave C. and in a reversal of last years positions Stuart M. pipped Paul G by just 4 points to take the first position and overall winner Well done Stuart you had a great year!
The club would like to thank Howard for his continued support, and we hope he enjoys the champagne!!

99: Sunday March 20th BH Wingate Competition

Spring has arrived( as predicted in the last report), and the weather was a darn sight warmer than of past. This was the Wingate shoot spread over three shoots the next being on the 2nd of April and then the 30th April. All individual scores are added together, with presentations after the final shoot.
The scores reflected the better weather, as everyone knows that there is nothing worse than participating in a competition when one's hands and feet are numb, and a strong north wind blowing up your........barrels.
Stuart scored a terrific 86% to take high gun on the day, and also collected his yearly trophies that he had won on the previous Friday. (see pics) Second place went to Mike S. with 41and Tom was third with 39. Fourth, Fifth, ad Sixth slots, went to Paul G. Darrel C. and Dave C. respectively, who all collected a medal for their efforts day.

100: Saturday April 2nd BH Wingate Trophy

Yet again congrats to Stuart M. (the one in the hat,- see pics) who scored a magnificent 76 %, in the second shoot of the Wingate competition. The set up, thanks to Matt Dave and Neil, was over two disciplines, a suedo down the line 25 birds, and a 25 bird sporting. Most shooters prefer either of these layouts, but not both, as Stuart obviously did.
The driven into the pit from about 15 yards was the most enjoyed, when hit they were dusted, and a miss sees the bird continuing embarrassingly over the shooters head. The Tower was quite testing and the simultaneous going away, left to right and right to left were not to clever either! A most enjoyable morning was had by all, especially as it stayed dry.
Other positions, for the day, were joint 2nd. Mike S .and Daryl C. with daveC. in fourth position.
And, I almost forgot, thank you to Howard for the first of the two new Autos!.

101: Sunday April 17th Bisley Sponsored Day

Thank you to Bisley who sponsored our shoot on Sunday. They supplied gun cleaning equipment for the top three. So, no excuses now to the winners, for not turning up with shiny guns! It was a shiny day as well, perfect for the London marathon, and the second F.A. cup semi final at Cardiff between Man U and Chelsea ( well, should have been) but unfortunately, was in fact Newcastle. Shiny shooting as well with the top three guns averaging nearly 41 %.The highest I can ever remember for the top three, (unless you know a higher average top three score?).
It was a brilliant set up by Dave C. and Mat C., which reminds me, that we haven't had any takers for help as yet in setting up. Just once or twice a year would be helpful, see Dave for details.
Bary E. scored magnificently on the day, a 37, which would normally take top position, but Stuart M. came steaming in with a 40 on his card to take second spot, and yes, you guessed it, with 44, the veteran Paul Gater was the eventual winner, well done you three!
It seemed to be a high scoring day with many guns finishing in the mid 30's.
The club results were equally exciting, and the results were as follows
A class 1st. Paul G. 2nd. Stuart M.
B class 1st. Dave C. 2nd. (after a shoot off with Barry H.) Daryl C.
C. class 1st Graham 2nd Terry S.

102: Saturday April 30th BH Wingate Competition

Would the close scoring between Mike S. and Stuart M. continue into the third part of Paul G's Wingate competition on Saturday? That was the question on everyone's lips, well mine anyway!
The early morning mist lifted over the ground revealing some sun and broken cloud (yes I know, I should be writing holiday brochures!) for the final stage of this marathon 150bird comp. Testing stands all round particularly stand 2, which was a simultaneous pair. A left to right, at about3 feet off the ground , the other being a slower driven quartering bird from the right, interesting..........The bateau from the pit were just as 'interesting', the clays appeared over head, and turned half circle to reveal their edges in front of the stand!!

After a shoot off with Ed., Terry T. was 8th. behind Graham and James in 7th. and 6th. positions respectively. Neil H was 5th. and Daryl C. took the fourth slot. Dave C. who had shot well in all the three competitions was third on 105. And believe it or not there was a tie for the top two placing with Stuart and Mike S. on 120.There then followed a tense shoot off, with Mike S. victorious by one clay over Stuart M. Congratulations to Mike S. and to all those who took part.
Thanks to Dave, Mat, and Neil for setting up, and thanks also to Paul G. for arranging the competition and supplying the prizes.

103: Sunday May 15th Secretary's Trophy

Over 30 participants, correctly ignored the heavy rain forecast, and were greeted with some excellent conditions for this 50 bird contest. My forecast of last year's winner, Paul G. repeating the performance, was also wrong, with High Gun going to the 'on form' Stuart M. Other placings were as follows,
2nd. Dave W.
3rd. Daryl C.
4th. Barry H. (After a shoot off, and with a bad back!)
5th. Brian I.
6th. Paul G.

104: Saturday May 28th Independent Magazines Club Shoot
Click HERE for More Pictures (Thanks to Patrick)
After the blistering heat of the previous day (89 degrees in Biggin Hill) the weather was a lot cooler, and windier for the Independent Magazine sponsored shoot.
First of all the club would like to thank Matt who set up on his own . No set up, no shoot, easy really. If there is anyone who can help just on the odd occasion, please speak to Matt.
James invited a pal, Ant, along to see how the shoot went, and he, Ant, then scored 80 p.c. and was High Gun for the day!!! I hope James explained that we only shoot once a year! Winner of the club competition was Stuart M. on 38 with Barry E. and Paul G. joint 3rd on 37.
Howard will let you have the Trophy Stuart just as soon as we can find it, sorry.
Also enjoying the shooting was Ben and half a dozen friends, who were having 'stag' weekend, and were being instructed by Peter G., and believe it or not, there was not one mention of Shotgun Wedding. Glad you enjoyed the day Ben, and good luck in August!
Thanks to all 25 participants, and also to Paul and Dan who helped Matt after the shoot

105: Sunday June 12th Gamebore Sponsored Day

Gamebore sponsored our 50 bird shoot on Sunday, and yet again there was a
large turnout, over 25 people took part. It was a terrific layout- thanks to Dave and Matt.
We now seem to have resolved the "Flying rabbit" They now (in most cases)
travel firmly on the ground before disappearing into the pit, and surprise it
was amazing how many were missed! One clever shooter, who will remain nameless,
attempted to take them after they had gone into the pit and reappeared the  other side,
actually hitting two!!
Darrel C. shot well again, ( 80% ), took the high gun spot, and received a
ticket for two rounds at the next shoot. Dave was second with Robin 3rd, and
Ed taking fourth position, who all received one free round, together with
Andy who was trying, but failed to beat his dad Bob.

106: Saturday June 25th "Have a go Day"
'Ready and Waiting for the 22 scouts'  ' family celebrating their son's 11th. Birthday'

BHCPSC had there annual 'Have a go Day' on Saturday. This is when anybody interested in shooting can pop a long and have a free go. Yes free!. Nothing too technical or challenging just a few stands set up with a going away bird. The idea is for entrants just to get a feel of the gun and learn some safety and tuition from the coaches. It was a slow start, as a party booking off 22 didn't show, we heard later that the M25 /A25 had several miles of tail backs. In fact this worked out quite well as the pool shoot we ran finished early( Yes Paul G. won with 86 %) just when about 30/35 people came along for 'a go' between 11-30 and 1 p.m. Everybody enjoyed themselves and there were about 7/10 people who were interested in returning on a shoot day! Thank you to everybody who took part.

107: Sunday July 10th Browning Sponsored Day

Browning were our sponsors for Sunday's club shoot, and our thanks to them
for supplying the prizes. Despite the fact that it was the British Grand Prix
at Silverstone a great number of members turned up, about 35, for this 50 bird
sporting competition. The set up was excellent and It was one of those days,
when you either shoot well or total crap, nothing in between, and no
exceptions I was in the later of those two.
Shooting brilliantly was Paul G. and Stuart M. sharing the top spot on 38
and, because of time restraints (er Silverstone) Stuart becoming the overall
winner after a shoot off, or toss up, or maybe it was a toss off, who knows, to
take the first prize Barry H. who hasn't shot for quite a few weeks, scored
an excellent 36 to take third position.
Thanks again to Browning for the goodies.

Just a 'friendly' practice shoot was the order of the day for Saturday, all getting their eye in for the next big shoot in a couple of weeks 'The Treasurers Trophy', -not to be missed!!
It was nice to see Zeke again, and we all look forward to you completing a round. Also to see Peter T. who shot an excellent round, just to show what we all have been missing!

Although there was no competition , there was still some excellent scores, notably Mike S on 38 and an unbeatable 41 from Daryl C. Thanks to Dave who set up on his own, and to the Paul G. family, pic. who helped in the clearing up!

109: Sunday August 7th Treasurer's Shield

The telephone call came on Thursday, "Terry is it your shoot on Sunday"?
"No, I replied, its your shoot Jonathan, I am the sponsor supplying the Trophies
and goodies, why?" To cut a long story short our trusty 'setter uppers' were
all unable to make it. Nightmare, as it is one of the best shoots of the
year. Well personally not knowing a batteau from a battery I was not the man to
set up. And very kindly Jon stepped into the breach. Fortunately Brian N. And
Peter were doing a corporate shoot for 12 of our 'boys in blue', so after I
phoned round the members to ensure all their tax discs were up to date,
there were enough hands to set up.
The shoot was 50 birds over 5 stands, shot in teams,. Each team nominated a
Captain, and on completion of the round, the highest and lowest score for
each board was scrubbed and an average was then taken from the remaining
shooters on that board, to calculate the top team.

About 25 guns took part from the normal 35-40. Somebody mentioned it may have
been because of the holiday period, or the final day of the second test, but
personally I put it down to our 'visitors'
Joking aside it was an excellent shoot enjoyed by all with Stuart M. scoring
a terrific 42 and taking top spot and the Treasurers Shield for 2005.There
was a shoot off for second spot where Bob, who also collected a medal for
scoring 8 out of 10 on the difficult stand three) was victorious over James, who
both shot an impressive 74% Daryl C. was 4th. (Sorry No pic) with Barry E
(having combed his hair) in 5th. So congratulations to you all!
Team Captain of the winning board was Nigel L. who picked up a trophy, and
all of his team, Bob, Andy, Edd, Dave, Daryl and James, a bottle of wine each.
Thanks to Terry for the goodies, and best wishes to Dave C. for a speedy
recovery.

110: Saturday August 20th Practice Shoot
After all the excitement of the previous Treasurer's Trophy, we had a quiet practice shoot on Saturday, no hassle, no prizes, and more importantly, no rain! It was a busy shoot with a Stag Party of 10 enjoying the first part of a busy Stag weekend.
Dave and Mat were back (see pic), and despite trying to hide the traps in the sheds, a friendly shoot did take place. Paul G was high gun with 78% Daryl second with 76% and the returning Dave C on 72% in third position. Not forgetting Matt D. who shot an attractive 32!
Thank you to the chaps who have put their name down as 'help' in setting up for future shoots. and to Stacey who helped Rosemary out with all those 'Stag' sandwiches.

111: Sunday September 4th Saddlery & Gunroom Trophy

Sunday, was the second day of the Biggin Hill Air show, it was also the annual shoot for the Saddlery and Gun Room trophy (effectively, the shop's yearly shoot) The Holiday period took hold again, and traffic concerns for the Air Show traffic, (unfounded as it transpired) resulted in about only 25 shooters taking part. But what a shoot, with the top 6 averaging 77%!!
Dave C. and Matt made a welcome return, and set up a challenging layout, with some of the so called 'easier' birds (not the ones in the Black Horse!) proving deceptively difficult for some shooters, me included.
It was a three way tie for first position, yes you've guessed it, between Paul G. who was last years winner, Stuart M, and our recent dark horse, no relation to the aforementioned, Bob, who shoots with his Son Andy. all scored39. After an exciting shoot off, the intrepid Stuart M. took the top spot with Paul in second, and Bob in third position. A second shoot off was then needed for the other positions with Keith D. Daryl C. and Barry E .who all scored 38. The mighty Keith was the winner of this group thus taking fourth position, fifth and sixth were Daryl and Barry E. respectively.
So well done to our Champion Stuart M., and many thanks to Howard for supplying the trophies.

112: Saturday September 17th Barnsby Sponsored Shoot

We shot for the Barnsby trophy on Saturday. A magnificent shield yes , but
not a magnificent turn out, about 20 contestants took part, I guess it was
because this was a Saturday shoot which, are normally quieter than the Club
shoot on Sundays. It was a great set up, as usual, and because of the low
numbers, everyone shot round in record time, which allowed for some practice at the
end. It was nice to see members enter the comp. who normally just go along for
the practice, I have always said that taking part in a competition is the
best practice. Notably Hassan ventured onto a board and came joint fourth !!
In third position was Matt D. and there was a shoot off for first position
between Daryl C. and Dave C. who both scored 40 . Dave was the eventual winner
and took the trophy.
Thanks to Barnsby for their continued support.

The shoot on Sunday was the sponsored Express Cartridges Shoot. It was a beautiful sunny morning, with a slight chilly breeze, perfect conditions for shooting. The numbers improved from the last couple of shoots, both entrants, and scores. Despite the tricky layout,( ask Barry H.), a third of the 'guns' scored over 60%!! This was a 'high gun' shoot with Paul G taking the top spot with Stuart M. coming in close second, Daryl C was third, and Bob Y. and Patrick C. were fourth and fifth respectively Thanks to Dave and Matt for setting up (with the welcome return of 'Diving' Neil H.) and thanks to Express Cartridges.

114: Saturday October 15th Napier Sponsored Day

I was looking through the scores over the past few years shoots, (Boring I here you say), and it was quite noticeable how the general score totals have improved. Scores in the high 20's or low 30's or lets say averaging 55-65% were often a winning score. Often now, it is closer to 70/80% and that isn't always good enough.
Saturday was no exception. This was the Napier Sponsored Day, and the weather was perfect shooting weather, no rain or wind to blame for missing birds, (unfortunate in my case, but then I did win it last year!). Again it was tremendous layout, thanks to Matt and Oliver, with tough high quartering crosses and jumpin' rabbits, and that was just one of the stands!
Daryl C was in 6th spot, with Stuart M. 5th, after a shoot off with Robin (4th.), who both scored 36. Barry E.(2nd)) was the victor over Bob Y.(3rd.) (who's daughter kindly did some scoring for us) in another shoot off after each scoring 38 in the comp. The winner on a magnificent 43, was Paul G.
So you see what I mean about the higher totals. It was a great shoot and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, high scores or not.

115: Sunday October 30th Beretta Sponsored Day

Beretta were our sponsors for our shoot on Sunday, with various goodies of Gun Slip, Cartridge Bags, and Ear-defenders, as prizes. It was a late start, and some members were getting excited and wanted to get on with the comp. as Paul G. and Stuart M. hadn't arrived. I thought even I might have a chance, but it was only right to wait. (A three gun competition wouldn't be fair anyway!!) then everyone seemed to arrive at the same time, all 25 of them. There were a few new faces who joined in and seemed to enjoy themselves.
The shoot was the normal 50 birds over 6 stands set up by Dave C. and, considering the space constrictions we have, put up some really testing 'birds'.
The intrepid Stuart M. was top gun with a magnificent 86%, second was Daryl who shot an excellent 39, with Dave C. in third after a 5-3 shoot off victory over James (See Pics)
Thanks to Stuart , Bob and Andy Y, who helped in clearing up the traps and stands.

Well done to James who shot a superb 36 to take the Chris Wallace Trophy, on
Saturday. I heard later from Ed, that he only won, as Darrel C. (last years
winner) was giving James lessons on the way round, believe that, believe
anything I say. But he shot well and missed a few easier birds, that would have
seen an even better score. Darrel and Paul G. both scored 35, and the remaining
scores were all pretty tight down to 30.

117: Sunday November 27th Turkey Shoot

Apologies to everyone for a slightly late start on Sunday, we had slight technical difficulties.
None the less it was worth waiting for, as this was the infamous 'Turkey Shoot' I have mentioned this story before but it deserves a rerun for our younger readers. It was about two years ago and at a shoot before the Turkey Shoot. I asked a couple of new members if they were coming to the next shoot, both declined as they said that they didn't agree with shooting animals or birds! The following year Matt told a novice a similar story, and that was, that Howard arranges for an artic lorry, full of turkeys, to pull alongside the field, and are then released, into the waiting guns!! All was explained, frozen birds were the order of the day, from Safeways (Not those on the tills!)
Members shot in pairs on a flush shoot of 60 birds, any four out of five clays put up, each time, non stop, until each shooter had used a total of 34 shells. We then shot 3 stands of Sporting 2/4 pairs and 1/ 5 pairs, to give a total of 50 birds. Thanks to Dave and Matt for the set up and their hard work.
No Jokes about 'shooting like a turkey' as the standard was quite high, with surprisingly, Paul G. Stuart M. and Darrel C. not finishing in the top three................ come on, they deserve a break.
Results were as follows..
1st. Dave C. and James
2nd. Simon and Mike S.
3rd Brian I and Barry H.
So well done to them and the other 20odd guns that braved the frost, and thanks to Howard for the goodies

Thanks to Stuart M. who helped set up, and clear up (twice). on Saturday's Tony Gargiulo shoot.
Bearing in mind it is just a couple of weeks to Christmas, and more importantly just two shopping weekends, there was a reasonable turnout, about 25 guns in total for this annual shoot.
The conditions were as good as you can get for shooting, just the clays being the problem, especially that wicked batteau, wicked, being in the pre 1995 context, if yunowotimeen .
George, who had been practising in the week with his side- by- side, shot an attractive 28, score that is, with Barry E. and Keith D. an even prettier 30. Fourth spot was Dave C. on 34, with Daryl scoring 35 to be third. Paul G. was second on 36. Yes and you guessed it in first position, Christmas Champion, high gun and Trophy winner of 2005 was Terry.........................sorry, Stuart M.
So well done to Stuart, excellent shooting, also thanks to Robin and others who helped in clearing up the ground with Dave C.
